Frequently Asked Questions

Why Adopt?

All socks come into the world a twin. However, whether by accident or neglect, each year thousands of perfectly wearable socks tragically lose their birth-mate. Left-behind single socks languish unworn in dresser drawers, at the bottom of gym bags, or pinned in the laundry room waiting for their twin to resurface.

All too often, these lone socks are seen as useless. These soles never get the opportunity to find a new mate, or embrace the thrill of mix and matching with other single socks.

When you adopt a sock you give it a new lease on life, and you show the world that ALL socks have value.

When you adopt a sock, you adopt a friend.

I have a single sock at home. What should I do with it?

We encourage you to adopt a mate! You are welcome to bring your Foot Friend with you to any of our adoption events. We also encourage wearing your single sock with compatible, non-matching socks.

Can I adopt two single socks to make a new pair?

Yes! Consult with one of our friendly volunteers for a suitable match!

What comes in my Adoption Kit?

Your Adoption Kit contains:
1. Your new Foot Friend, laundered, repaired, with a handwritten, unique tag.
2. An official adoption certificate
3. A thank you letter and care instructions.
4. A LSRS sticker.

What are your adoption fees?

$8 CDN for a single sock.
$12 CDN for a pair.
Most of this fee goes to cover postage and handling. Fees are typically waived at our in-person adoption events, and in November for Adoption Awareness month.

Where do the shelter socks come from?

Most of our socks arrive as discarded single sock foundlings. Sadly, there is widespread believe that socks have no value without a matching mate. We also receive bonded pairs surrendered from homes that can no longer care for or wear them.

Some of our socks require repair and rehabilitation before they can be adopted to their new Forever Foot.

What is the Society's position on sock repurposing?

We at the Lost Sock Rescue Society believe that every sock has the right to be worn with dignity and respect. Single and unmatched socks and should enjoy the same rights as those in matching pairs.

We do not condone the use of single, unmatched and unpaired socks as cleaning aids, white board erasers, pet toys, and especially the demeaning practice of sock puppetry.

We believe that all socks have the right to be worn regularly, repaired as needed, and cared for to ensure a long, happy and productive wear-life. Learn more about responsible sock ownership.
